The City Royale of Amboise was a important place during the French Renaissance. Take a walk in its small streets, alongside its old half-timbered houses with white stone. Dive into history and visit the Clos Lucé (house of Leonard da Vinci), the pagode of Chanteloup and the Royal Castle of Amboise.
The banks of the Loire river overflows with castles that you can visit like : Chenonceau, Chambord, Villandry, Cheverny, Azay-le-Rideau …
In Touraine, the gastronomy is very present.
What do you say about visiting the grand market of Amboise on sunday morning and bring back some Ste Maure de Touraine, a local goat cheese, and a nice wine from the area to savour.
Do not miss on tasting the fouées, small breads filled with rillettes, cheese, garlic butter …
To finish on a sweet note, don’t forget to bring back some Nougat de Tours. Previously used as “travelling food”, this pastry is made with marmelade, dried fruits and almonds. Ideal to travel in van or rooftop tent.
The other specialty of the area is the poire tapée, which once dehydrated is hit to remove the air and guarantee preservation.
